---------- Forwarded message ----------

Subject: Introducing Ashoka's Youth Venture

Dear friends,

Thank you for so promptly agreeing to support Youth Venture. Once we register you, please create a pledge page on the marathon site and help us to raise more money from your friends and family, by asking them to support your run. All the donations to Youth venture is exempt under Income Tax act.

Also please pass the below information about YV to your friends who might be interested as 21st august is the last date to register. We are charging rs. 3000 each. Have only 25 seats available so the sooner I hear from them the better.

Thanks a ton folks!

Ashoka’s Youth Venture.

Youth Venture is a global movement that inspires, invests, and supports young people to lead social change.

We believe it is critical that people discover early on in their lives that they can lead social change. We invest in young people to design and lead their own initiatives that create social impact.

We do this through a one year fellowship, where we support them to create entrepreneurial Ventures around a social issue they feel passionate about. As they form teams and work together in creating and launching their ‘Ventures’, young people learn the important skills of leadership, teamwork, entrepreneurship and empathy. They also realize that they are powerful and will continue to take initiative and lead again and again throughout their lives.

Established by Ashoka, the world’s leading association of social entrepreneurs and the pioneer of the social entrepreneurship movement, Youth Venture is nurturing young people’s dreams and providing them with mentorship and seed capital to help them initiate change in their communities

In the last 18 months, we have supported 79 young changemakers and their teams, in Mumbai and Songadh (a district in Rural Gujarat). See the attached document and www.genv.net/india.
Watch our Changemakers in action at

Thank you for your interest in supporting Youth Venture at the Mumbai Marathon. Below is further details of our work. As I mentioned over the phone we count on the Marathon to raise the resources to invest in young people in Mumbai. Do let me know your ideas on how you can support the cause of young people leading social change.

Warmly,

Volunteers Needed in Delhi, Pune, Guwahati, Chennai, etc.

Received this mail from Dhaval Udani.

From: Smita Nayar <smita@giveindia.org>
Date: 2009/8/17
To: Dhaval Udani

Hi, here is the draft….

Would you like to help GiveIndia by volunteering with us for a few hours?
We're looking for volunteers for a one time activity - verifying
beneficiaries. What does that mean?

Well, as you may know, after a donor makes a donation through GiveIndia,
s/he receives a feedback
report <http://blog.giveindia.org/2008/04/feedback-reports-giveindia-promise-to.html> that
describes the person who benefited from their kindness. While we have
a
great deal of faith in our NGOs, as part of our efforts to increase
transparency and credibility, GiveIndia wants to make sure that these
beneficiaries really exist and have received the benefits mentioned in the feedback report.

So, if you live in Delhi, Pune, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Trichy, Erode, Chennai or
Bangalore please read on.

This one-time task involves:

1. Visiting specific beneficiaries identified by GiveIndia at an NGO
location which may include a centre or a school.

2. Verifying that the beneficiary exists and that s/he has received the
benefits as described in the feedback. Give India will support the volunteer
with all the information that is required for her/him to make this visit.

3. The visit has to be a 'surprise' visit - the beneficiary/ NGO will NOT
know the exact time of the visit.

4. You will need to send us a report based on a template we give you.

5. The visit ideally has to be done on a weekday. The duration of this
exercise is actually limited to verifying information as described in the
feedback and nothing else.

6. The organisation is not in a position to reimburse you any expenses.

If this is something that interests you, please write to
smita@giveindia.org for more information.

Workshop on Reading Outside the Curriculum, Aug 13, Calcutta

Reading Text: A Workshop with Minu Tharoor on 'Reading Outside the Curriculum' for Students and Teachers

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=134166951348

This workshop is about encouraging students to read outside the curriculum, to enjoy reading, to derive important ideas from what they read, and to relate those ideas to issues that are pertinent to their lives and the world around them. The particular texts that we will discuss are often about unfamiliar places and unexpected circumstances. The power of the writing compels us to confront those subjects, enter their concerns and perhaps reexamine our own assumptions and our interactions with others. These texts also allow us to focus on how to negotiate difference, how conflict and miscommunications occur, but transformation and understanding as well.

Among the questions that we will explore through our readings and discussions are:
—What kinds of texts (stories, essays, poems) are likely to hold the students’ attention and make reading an attractive exercise?
—How can we as educators help them to deepen their experience of reading?
—Should students apply all that they read to their own lives and worlds? Is there a value in the unfamiliar?
—Stereotypes feature in some of the texts. Why do they exist? How much of them do we share?
—These are texts primarily meant for adults. Are they accessible to senior class students? Is the violence in some too disturbing?

Faciliatator: Minu Tharoor (Professor of English, New York University)

Date:
Thursday, August 13, 2009
Time:
3:00pm - 7:00pm
Location:
The Seagull Arts and Media Resource Centre
Street:
36C, S. P. Mukherjee Road, Kolkata

Entry Free. But prior registration with name and phone number required.

Last date of registration: 10 August 2009

To register, call Megha Malhotra at 2455 6942/43

Workshop on Appreciating Qawwali and Sufi Music in October in Delhi

From: Ektara India <ektaraindia@email.com>
Subject: Workshop on Appreciating Qawwali and Sufi Music, at Delhi

Dear friends
Ektara, a group of media and arts professionals, invites applications
to participate in a 4-weeks practical workshop on the appreciation of
Qawwali and Sufi music, to be held in Delhi from October 3 to 31,
2009.

www.ektara.org

This workshop is open for anyone interested in learning to appreciate
Sufi poetry, music and Qawwali better. The participants do not have to
have a prior knowledge or training of music, nor is there an age-bar.
The course would comprise of about 12 sessions of 2 hours each (mostly
in English, but with some Hindustani) to be conducted at a central
location of Delhi (in an around the region of Nizamuddin dargah) with
a couple of heritage walks around the historical monuments. The course
would also focus on the poetic and musical heritage of the city of
Delhi, especially the repertoire of poets such as Amir Khusrau. The
sessions would be conducted by practicing musicians, well known
scholars, and members of Ektara group, and would comprise of
illustrated lectures, live music demos, video screenings, guided
visits to the dargah, listening sessions and more. By the end of 3

Subject: Job Opening for the Mathematics Project at the XRCVC, St.Xavier's College, Mumbai

Are you someone who finds numbers, equations and calculations the most fascinating part in the world around us? Did you always have a blank look when someone said mathematics is the most traumatic subject of study? Did you always think, if only I can find a way to teach you then may be you will think differently?

Do you now want to add an extra twist to this tale? What if someone asked you, are you interested in teaching mathematics to visually challenged students?

If this has kept your curiosity please read on.

About Us

The Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) is a specialized support and advocacy centre for the visually challenged located at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Our work is driven by challenging myths, breaking barriers and finding new solutions where none existed before. To know more about us you can visit our website www.xrcvc.org

Who are we looking for?

Traditionally school systems have discouraged visually challenged students from learning mathematics. This leads them to be put to a disadvantage in later years of their lives in pursuing higher education needing mathematics as a base. Over last one year the XRCVC has worked with mathematics training for competitive exams and has successfully had its students clearing entrance examinations for higher education courses in Management, Social Work etc.

We are ready to now launch a full fledged mathematics project and are looking for full time/part time professionals to take on the same. The role of the person would include a combination of these roles

  • Awareness work with visually impaired persons, caregivers and schools about the necessity of mathematics training.
  • Training and coaching of visually challenged students – school, college, and entrance exam batches.
  • Creating of accessible material in mathematics.

If any or all of these tasks seem interesting to you and you want to explore this job please get in touch with us latest by 19th August 2009 at the details given below.

If you are interested but a doubt has sprung in your mind ‘I’d love to do this, but I don’t know anything about how to teach the blind’ we would say contact us. The ‘How’ is our responsibility, once you are keen the how will be taken care of by us

Look forward to hearing from you. Remuneration would be on par with qualifications and experience and part time/full time nature of the assignment
