http://dirttrackproductions.com/trailers/ridingsolo/index.html

About the film One Crazy Ride:
A motorcycle expedition on uncharted roads across the Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh, situated in
North-east India. But more than an expedition, it's a film on friendship, camaraderie and the "never say die"
attitude of five motorcyclists in the face of unforgiving terrain.

Shot with no back-up vehicle or film crew, in parts of India hardly seen, filmed or explored, the
documentary captures the interactions and experiences of the riders who are trying to chart a route, which
according to everyone does not exist.

About the film Riding solo to the top of the World:
Riding Solo... is an award winning film about filmmaker Gaurav Jani's solo motorcycle journey from
Mumbai to one of the remotest places in the world, the Changthang Plateau in Ladakh, bordering China. As
a one-man film unit, he astonishes you, filming the landscape he passes by and the people he interacts with,
capturing moments of beauty, pain, love, hardship, self doubt and spiritual triumphs.

Screening of 'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit', July 25, Bombay

From: <labialist@yahoo.com>
Date: 2009/7/20
Subject: Cine Labia invite for 25 July 2009
To: labia gmail <stree.sangam@gmail.com>

CineLabia presents

Oranges are not the only fruit (UK /1990 /2 hrs 30 min /Color /English)

Directed by Beeban Kidron

Written by: Jeanette Winterson

Cast: Charlotte Coleman, Emily Aston, Geraldine McEwan and Cathryn Bradshaw

Jeanette Winterson is a writer whose prowess with words has given birth to a pantheon of complexity and myth. Her first, acclaimed novel, Oranges are not the only fruit has been translated into film by the BBC. While the film is nothing like the book, it remains an important documentation of a young woman's struggle against the odds.

The film, which was formatted for a television series, traces the life of Jessica (Coleman), a  young protagonist whose extraordinarily strong will and heart enable her to rebel against her fanatical, cult-like upbringing.

From the ages of seven to seventeen, Jess is brainwashed into being one of the ‘saved’ and devotes her life to Jesus. The discriminatory teachings of Pastor Finch and his understanding of Revelations appear absurd to the lay viewer, but Jess’s admiration for her mother, a staunch believer, make her attempt to fit into the regime and spread the word of Jesus.

However, Jess's ‘friendship’ with another girl, Melanie (Aston), develops into something that the Church terms ‘unnatural’, and she comes to realise the hypocrisy of the Pastor’s teachings.

Jess’s matter-of-fact work at a funeral parlor is starkly presented. Her uphill journey is movingly portrayed by Coleman. Mc Ewan is admirably convincing as the mother.

Tournament of Traditional Board Games, July 25-26, Bangalore

(download)

From:   Ranjini GS <kavadehive@gmail.com>
Subject: KAVADE Traditional Games tournament-July 25th & 26th

In the olden days, summer vacations and any free time was spent with
friends, cousins, aunts, uncles & grandparents staying in different
parts of the world. Time well spent, in the absence of electronic
devices that are providing entirely passive entertainment today.

In such an age when we are bombarded with videogames, television &
plastic toys, it is imperative that we re-open our treasure chest of
traditional games. A game with set of 4 or 6 cowrie shells has so much
to teach us. Several emotions are stirred up when the shells fall with
their openings upwards. These are simple pleasures that go on to make a
HAPPY CHILD who will carry sweet memories of ‘growing up’.

KAVADE, a niche toy hive in Bangalore, is organising a *tournament of
Indian traditional board games on July 25th & 26th. (More details in the
attached flier)*

*A single registration entitles 1 individual (age 8yrs +) & his/her
parent/grandparent (if interested) to participate in the tournament.

Spread the word among interested people & let us bring back those good
old days.*

Please email/call to confirm your participation & provide these details
by July 20th: Game/s interested in, participants name, age, male/female,
contact details.
The rules of the games will be emailed back to you.

Warm regards,
Sreeranjini

Queer Nazaria - Film Screening, July 31, Marine Lines

From: sophie parisse <sophie.parisse@gmail.com>

Subject: Fwd: Queer Nazaria

presents
Queer Nazaria

'We won. We are legal'
On 2nd July 2009, the LGTBI community has been decriminalised by the High Court decision in Delhi which read down Section 377 of the IPC. It is the achievement of a long term struggle which opens a new era of freedom for sexual minorities in India.

This milestone judgement, which gave us recognition, opens the doors towards inclusiveness, social and cultural acceptance and further gains in areas of civil, political and human rights.

'There is a long road ahead to end discrimination, to ensure equal rights and the ability to exercise them are in place', states Sunil Gupta, a Delhi based photographer and openly gay man.

The spirits are high and with this first stunning achievement, we are full of hope that many more victories are to come.

The film program takes us to different parts of the world and attempts to look at the queer individual and the LGTBI community in society and society's gaze back. Glancing at this reflected image, the question that manifests asks - is it enough that a society only protects us with a set of rights or do we also need the freedom to act as who we are within that society. Legal recognition and human rights are very important but social acceptance is equally, if not more, crucial.

These films will extend this essential idea of acceptance to include our sexuality, our gender presentation, our choice of sex work as livelihood, and how we love.

After each film there will be an informal discussion to share points of view amongst the audience.

This film program is a teaser to relish before the Queer Azaadi Mumbai March on 16thAugust, which kicks off at August Kranti Maidan in which we will celebrate diversity and proudly state 'hum sab ek hai'.

The Queer Azaadi March (QAM) is the collective result of several of Mumbai's very own LGBTI individuals and organizations. This is our home, and QAM is our march together for the freedom of expression of our sexual identities and pride in being ourselves. QAM '09 looks forward marching together with our family, friend, supporters and the people of our much loved city toward a better future for Mumbai's queers, for acceptance, tolerance and understanding of our lives and personalities.

For more information on on the QAM March visit the blog at http://queerazaadi.wordpress.com

We would like to thank all the artists, producers and distributors for giving us their oeuvres free of cost. We are also thankful to the Alliance Française de Bombay for giving us their auditorium and screening facilities. Without this generosity we wouldn't have been able to bring you these films.

Friday 31st July 2009 @ 6.30 pm

Help scan books for a visually impaired friend - In Malad

Please share this with anyone who might help/stays in Malad. Thanks. - Chandni

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: garima goyal <garimagoyal21@gmail.com>

Hi Chandni,
I will be glad if you could forward this email to your mailing list.

Hello all,
I am Garima Goyal, a student of the Social Communications Media course
at Sophia College, Mumbai. I am visually impaired, and that is what
has brought me here to ask for your help.
Being a professional media course, the projects and assignments demand
36 hours out of the 24 hours in a day. I being visually impaired,
cannot do the extensive reading required   directly through the hard
copy. I need to scan the books and then read the soft copy. I need
some one –college student or anyone else- to scan them for me. If
anyone wants to take this up as a part time job, we can discusss the
timings  and all else when you get in touch with me. I am very
flexible. The only constraint is you will have to come to my residence
in  Malad west and   do the work, since I need the hard copies scanned
into a doc or txt format, which the software on my computer does.
If not a part time commitment, anyone interested to do it one off can
also contact me.
Please spread this to all, who you feel will be interested to take it up.
Thanks for taking out time and reading this.
Look forward to your early replies.
Regards,
Garima

Giving (and Getting) Stuff for Free...

Hi,

As you know, here's my small initiative to help individuals and organisations in India looking for funds:

http://twitter.com/FundACause

http://FundACause.posterous.com

Take a look at initiatives that facilitate the donation of materials (clothes, books and much more) here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mumbaifreecycle

http://karmayog.org/material

http://www.thehelphub.org

The Help Hub: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=65225915640

So, if you'd like to give (and get) stuff for free, you know where to go!

- Chandni

Postscript: Whilst GiveIndia, Goonj and India Helps do much more (than facilitate the transfer of stuff), you could also donate materials to some of the people they're helping.

Hi Chandni,

I'll be in Bombay from the 10th Jul-14th Aug working on a research project based on institutionalizing the informal recycling sector in Bombay along with other waste management issues. I have a research fellowship from The University of Texas at Austin, but it hasn't managed to cover my entire budget. I was wondering if you knew of any organization that needed help with research or writing or editing articles/reports. In terms of research, I've worked in the economic development field specifically in Microfinance, and am now starting to work in the waste management sector. Let me know if any organization needs a freelance writer/researcher!

Thanks,
Nikishka
