Contesting Media Realities: Unpacking the Real

National Seminar
January 29 – 30, 2009

Distinctions between the real and the imagined are often understood

Release of Book on Child Sexual Abuse, Feb 7, Colaba

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: FACSE <facse95@gmail.com>
Subject: Invitation from FACSE

Dear Friends,

FACSE invites you for the release of the book - Tug and Tear by Albertina Almeida on child sexual abuse.

The book is published by Jan Ugahi (People's Awakening), a public charitable trust established in 1995 that works with the marginalized backward classes especially women and children from Goa.

One of the major issues Jan Ugahi addresses is that of child sexual abuse. Goa, being a tourist destination, has gained some notoriety especially with regard to foreign tourists. The organization through its efforts alerts the locals and shack owners about child sexual abuse by pedophiles. Children working as migrant laborers are the most vulnerable. Besides counseling of the children, Jan Ugahi has also partnered with Childline and has a crisis intervention helpline for such vulnerable children.

Albertina Almeida, a Panjim based lawyer is the legal advisor at Jan Ugahi and
addresses the legal issues related to children and the violations of their rights.
The book titled 'Tug and Tear' is a compilation of case studies of victims of child
sexual abuse and the challenges faced while delivering justice to the victims.

As there is a dearth of documented literature on the issue of child sexual abuse in our country, FACSE and Jan Ugahi felt that by releasing such a compilation would be useful to those in the field.

The Author, Ms. Albertina Almeida as well as the Managing Trustee and Program Coordinator, Ms. Bernadette D'Souza of Jan Ugahi Trust would be happy to have an interactive session with the participants.

We cordially invite you to join us for this programme. Please feel free to extend this invitation to others who are interested.

Date: 7th February, 2009

Time: 4:00- 6:00 pm

Venue:   Holy Name School Hall, Colaba

Next to Eucharistic Congress, Bldg No 3.

             5 Convent Street, Colaba

Kindly confirm your participation by 2nd February 09' at facse95@gmail.com or by telephone to Ms. Ketki (Coordinator): 9820996223 or 022- 23002683.

Talk on Terrorism & Democracy, Jan 30, VT

INSAANIYAT

INVITES YOU TO

"Terrorism and Democracy: resisting the cultural and legal backlash"

talks by

Vrinda Grover               &         Saeed Mirza

Lawyer and Human Rights Activist               Writer and Film Director

Tough laws do not enhance peoples' security, they only strengthen authoritarian tendencies in the State. The aftermath of the November terror strikes has seen a rapid recourse to draconian legislation based on a principle (Presumption of guilt at the threshold) which is contrary to international law. We are also seeing a concerted drive to impose a de facto ban on performers, literature, music, etc. from Pakistan. What can we do to resist such bigotry and cultural fascism?

Venue:  Conference Room, The Press Club, Mumbai

Time and date : 6.00 – 8.00 p.m. Friday 30th January 2009

The meeting will be chaired by Mihir Desai

From "Elektrik Artists" <artists@bombayelektrik.com>

Screening of the following films has been organised by The Bombay Elektrik Project:

TransIndia

Directed by: Sapna Sahani
Duration: 4mins

A look at the life of a transgender person in Bombay who is a source of inspiration to
others in her community because of her selfless dedication to outreach and spreading

homosexuals as criminals in India, life in urban society, and being HIV positive.
------------------

Towers of Mumbai – A documentary on the streets

Language: English narration with Hindi interviews (with subtitles)
Director and Producer (Varun Grover)
Duration: 30 minutes 50 seconds

Synopsis: The documentary, Towers of Mumbai, profiles the festival through two different, now-concurrent now-anti, ideologies at play in Mumbai. Alternating between a Dahi-Haandi team (called 'Lashkar-e-Shivba') in Central Mumbai and a group of old-men in Girgaum, part
of the same group which started this festival in Mumbai 75-years ago, the film tracks the lives and mechanics of the people involved in the festival. From a peep into their daily lives, to the grueling training sessions, to the final day where 200-men board the trucks to help and support their team on the streets – Towers of Mumbai documents the commercial, social and political aspects of this unique festival which combines culture, sport, and religion into one risky, gritty competition of human spirit and fantasies.
---------------------

Shikhar – the spirit of mallakhamb

Duration: 13min
Directed by: Nikhil
Cast and Crew:
Pramod,Shreyas, Nikhil, Percy, Meghna, Lopamudra

Synopsis: This Documentary revolves around 'Mallakhamb' - Malla – the Gymnast, Khamb –  Pole - an ancient traditional Sport that originated in Maharashtra in the early 12th century.Mallakhamb has different forms for instance – Rope mallakhamb and Rope and pole mallakhamb which is a combination of both the elements, the rope and the pole.

The Film showcases the innumerable difficulties the sportsmen face in a not- so- well known sport like Mallakhamb. The turmoil they go through due to lack of funds and infrastructure, the challenges they face every single day and yet rise out of it with only grit, resolution and determination as their 'mantra' of motivation to thrive in this extraordinarily perilous sport. For them, there are no boundaries, only the will and an enduring spirit to succeed. For them, the sky is just the beginning.

'Small is Beautiful' Community Festival, Jan 26, Kharghar

From rrivulaha@gmail.com

Dear Friends,
In the past months we tried to work out film screenings & discussions with a 'non- captive' audience of Kharghar...
What started with a drab idea of a festival called "Food for Thought" with scheduled screening & over the tea discussions rolled into something with more life and creativity...
It is a result of prolonged discussions with idle old men, housewives, working professionals little and big enthusiasts & friends...
There's a little dream born of something like a Sunday club, where the community can come together and unleash their creative soul...
On morning of Monday, 26th of January 2009, at the Community Centre of Kendriya Vihar, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai , we will make the act begin…
It is open to all from Kharghar and outside... But you won't find publicity poster anywhere because a few selected hand made posters are being put only within the Kendriya Vihar Campus by the little organizers group. The mode of publicity chosen is word of mouth and we are waiting to see the magic happen...
Already the society administration, some school teachers, NIFT students and a women's club has decided to actively support the act.
Those of you who wish to join the gang, pack some grub, pick up some waste paper/ wire/anything (you think can be of use) and come to Kendriya Vihar Community Centre, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai any time from 10:30 am onwards...
If you any difficulty you may call us at 9372446397.
Hope to see you coming Monday.
Cheers!
Indro, Sudarshan, Kaushik, Richa & Rrivu.
Volunteers
Small is beautiful

P.S. A little journalists' group is in the making. They are looking for a handy camera to film the spirit… Any help with resources is most welcome…

'SMALL  is  BEAUTIFUL'
Dear friends (small & big)
on
Monday, 26th January, 2009, 11:00 am onwards

wire jewellery
and
Much more things that we all will bring along.
Not to forget 'we are also watching films'
The Man who planted trees / Animation by Frédéric Back based on the classic story by Jean Giono
Secret Life of Plants by Walon Green based on Classic book by
Peter Tompkins
(A fascinating account of physical, emotional and spiritual relations between plants & man)
Future of Food by Deborah Koons Garcia
(There is a revolution transforming the very nature of the food we eat)
WE FEED THE WORLD by Erwin Wagenhofer
