Dear Friends,

iCONGO iNTEL and Associates are pleased to extend an invitation to a select few people to the Humane Capitalism Conclave 2009, which will be held from 22nd January to January 24th in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi in partnership with UNODC, EU Chambers of Commerce, USIBA, Lintas Media Group and various other partners.

The Humane Capitalism Conclave is an endeavour to create a forum and platform that promotes holistic CSR by involving responsible CSR practitioners from India and abroad. This conclave aims to define and discuss the "new corporate concept" of socially responsible business that has made its way into capitalistic economic structures over the past several decades. This new "caring" style of capitalism will be defined in relation to the values held by mainstream corporate culture.

With emphasis on the CSR Best Practices and Cause Related Marketing, the conclave will be discussing CSR as not just a buzzword, cheque book philanthropy or a cost centre, but how it can be practiced as a profit centre by using the triple bottom line approach i.e. not just meeting financial but also fulfilling the social and environmental bottom lines. This year, the conclave will also witness the launch of 'The Omega Rating' and the '100 Caring Businesses and Business Leaders'.

We would like you to help make the process as participatory by engaging with us in the forums to give your feedback and suggestions on Humane Capitalism. Please log on to http://www.dishoooom.com for further information.

Attached is the complimentary soft copy of invite. We at iCONGO avoid printed material wherever possible - our way of pitching in to save paper and the environment.

DOING GOOD WHILE DOING WELL

Why 'humane/caring' and not 'responsible': After speaking with various corporate leaders in various forums and consulting people from various sectors we realized that Humane / Caring encompasses responsible. It's like we care for our children, family and thus are automatically responsible towards them. Hence when we care as businesses for the social and environmental bottom- lines besides meeting the financial bottom-line we as businesses automatically become responsible towards the larger ecosystem by being humane and reaching out to see how we can make an impact by practicing the triple bottom-line approach. Humane capitalism as the nomenclature, was in fact suggested by one of our mentors Anu Aga who is not only a respected living legend in the business sectors but also a woman entrepreneur and champion, very involved with social justice issues.

This conclave aims to define and discuss the "new corporate concept" of socially responsible business that has made its way into capitalistic economic structures over the past several decades. This new "caring" concept of capitalism will be defined in relation to the values held by mainstream corporate culture.

The mission: To create a forum and platform that promotes holistic CSR by involving responsible CSR practitioners from India and Internationally to speak about best practices of CSR and Cause Related marketing where CSR is not just a buzzword, cheque book philanthropy or a cost centre but practiced as a profit centre by using the triple bottom line approach i.e. not just meeting financial but also fulfilling the social and environmental bottom lines.

The objective: To get more and more companies and captains of industry to practice holistic CSR by using the triple bottom line approach.

The Omega ratings for CSR: The world over we have ratings and lists of the world's best performing companies, most powerful people, most rich people, most influential people and so on. But what's the point of having all the money, power and influence in the world if one cannot responsibly use that wealth, influence and power for the betterment of society and it is all used purely for self-interest and overt and obscene display of wealth. The most caring companies and business people in India will be a list of people who have used their wealth, power and influence to promote social equity rather than just be listed as the wealthiest or most powerful people.

Residential Workshop – Theatre for Development as Cultural Action in Feb in Talegaon

Dear Friends

Seasons' Greetings!

Its time once again for our annual workshop – "Theatre for Development as
Cultural Action".

Even as we plan, we look back at our journey of having engaged in
theatre-based activities with groups and communities… It was in 1996, that
the coming together of a youth theatre group resulted in *Chhi!* – a one-act
play in Hindi on the issue of solid waste management. A two-year long
process and over 50 performances later, media matters formally came into
being.

In 2009, theatre continues to be one of our core areas of intervention –
trainings, workshops, working with groups and communities, performances,
post-performance discussions… The performing media initiative of media
matters now has a repertoire of plays being performed by its youth theatre
groups.

Consolidating these experiences, we organize our annual six-day residential
workshops – an opportunity to interact and work with both, 'development
actors' and 'theatre activists'.

Our previous workshops have been attended by participants representing CBOs,
NGOs, government departments, theatre groups and educational institutions
from across states – Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya
Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The age-group of
the participants ranged from 12 to 52 years. The issues deliberated upon
include rights of women, children and young people; eradication of leprosy
and TB, HIV & AIDS, disability, commercial sexual exploitation, water and
sanitation, gender and life skills.

This year too, we eagerly look forward to yet another opportunity for
sharing of experiences, demonstrating as well as exploring the scope and
possibilities of theatre – in engaging, enabling and empowering groups and
communities. Performances by groups practicing participatory theatre will
add value to the learning process.

We look forward to participation from your organization and partners.

Please find below details of the workshop. For registration or any further
queries, please feel free to contact us at info@mmindia. org or
91-251-2606929.

Warm regards

Seema Kurup

Protest against Noida Rape Case, Jan 12, Noida

From Saheli Women saheliwomen@gmail.com

Join us on Monday 12h January 2009, and also endorse the enclosed statement
against the recent rape case of a MBA student in Noida. This statement will
be printed with endorsements and distributed to public at the site where the
incident took place. So please send in your endorsements by tomorrow
(Saturday, 10th January) afternoon.

Place: Outside Great India Place Mall, NOIDA. This is near Radisson Hotel,
NOIDA, Sector 18.
Time : 5:30 pm
Contact: Kalpana (9212449198) , Nidhi (9818241224) .
In solidarity,
Saheli

*noida break your silence -- stop violence!*

We are disturbed by the rising incidents of violence against women in Delhi
and NCR. The gang rape of a young woman in NOIDA on 6th January has shocked
us all. This is indicative of a sick mentality where rape is used to
celebrate victory. And instead of demanding a proper inquiry and punishment
for the guilty, the elders of the village as well as teachers give
testimonials to the accused "they are from good families their, parents are
government officers". Masterji Prem Singh , managing his own private college
insists " there is nothing wrong with our boys, the police is harassing them
unnecessarily" – thereby condoning crime and giving a baseless clean chit to
the accused and abdicating his moral responsibility. A former Sarpanch of
the village has stated "she was just raped" making light of a heinous crime.

Newspaper reports continue to point to the growing panic among young girls
and their parents which prevents them from stepping out, going to college or
for that matter to work. Whereas women need to be encouraged to participate
in public life the failure of the keepers of law and order and the
aggressive and criminal behaviour of men has effectively confined women and
girls to their homes. Just two days before this rape case, a girl of 18 was
abducted from a crowded market where she had gone with her mother and aunt
to buy vegetables. She was also subjected to sexual assault. Both these
incidents took place in crowded places but nobody tried to intervene.

While it is important that people like us stop being silent spectators it is
imperative that the state and police functionaries need to do their jobs and
do it well. Justice is the only deterrent to such crimes on women - be they
rape, or abduction or honour killings as we have recently seen in NOIDA.
